THE PROJECT
Born from the initiative of Fondazione Centro Velico Caprera in collaboration with One Ocean Foundation, M.A.R.E. (Marine Adventure for Research & Education) is a citizen science project: its goal is to monitor the health of the Mediterranean Sea while promoting the study, understanding, and protection of the marine environment and its biodiversity.
CITIZEN SCIENCE

Citizen science is an innovative approach that brings together citizens, researchers, and institutions to collect scientific data. Through projects like M.A.R.E., communities can actively take part in research and environmental protection, encouraging dialogue between science and society for a positive impact on our planet.

THE ROUTES
Although the Mediterranean Sea Covers less than 1% of the world' ocean surface, it is home to 10% of all known marine species, making it a true biodiversity hotspot. However, its rich ecosystem is susceptible to human impact.
Protecting the Mediterranean Sea means protecting our future.

ONE'S JOURNEY
FOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM

AEARENESS
Spreading knowledge about the areas explored and sharing accessible content with a wide audience

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
Conducting in-depth scientific analysis of the areas, thanks to the presence of biologists on board

INFLUENCING
Involving ambassadors and public figures on board to share key insights with their communities and followers

INSTITUTIONAL SHARING
Engaging with national and international authorities to develop and promote a shared charter of best practices
PROJECT'S OBJECTIVES

Contribute to the understanding and conservation of marine biodiversity by mapping the presence and distribution of endangered species

Assess the level of pollution in the Mediterranean Sea, ensuring that the scientific community has access to baseline data on various persistent chemical pollutants

Raise awareness and promote advocacy through both events and digital outreach activities

Support scientific research by providing an open and free platform for researchers, students, and institutions
SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES
SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATIONS

“Integrating traditional and innovative monitoring approaches to monitor the marine biodiversity in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Mediterranean Sea)”
The study on the use of environmental DNA as a detection technique to monitor marine biodiversity in the Tyrrhenian Sea has been published in the scientific journal Marine Environmental Research
PARTNERS' COMMITMENT
NEW HORIZONS

The project is gaining an increasingly international dimension, also thanks to the scientific results achieved - an outstanding and unique contribution to Mediterranean research.
For our partners, it represents a key opportunity for outreach and concrete action in alignment with their mission goals.

"THE SEA IS OUR HOME"

Fondazione Centro Velico Caprera ETS is committed to protecting the marine environment and promoting personal well-being through direct contact with the sea and the practice of sailing. Education, research, and outreach are the core pillars that guide our work, with the aim of fostering respect for, protection of, and improvement of the marine ecosystem.
